Antique Biedermeier Cup Saucer "Gabe der Freundschaft" c1840s Germany

Description: Rare and beautiful, collectible, early 19th century cup and saucer set, Biedermeier period Germany. The cup features written phrase in German "Gabe der Freundschaft" translated as "Gift of Friendship". The Biedermeier period was an era in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848 during which the middle class grew in number and the arts appealed to common sensibilities. It does not refer to the era as a whole, but to a particular mood and set of trends that grew out of the unique underpinnings of the time in Central Europe. There were two driving forces for the development of the period. One was the growing urbanization and industrialization leading to a new urban middle class, which created a new kind of audience for the arts. Biedermeier style, in art, transitional period between Neoclassicism and Romanticism as it was interpreted by the bourgeoisie, particularly in Germany, Austria, northern Italy, and the Scandinavian countries. Following the Napoleonic sieges, the Biedermeier style grew during a period of economic impoverishment from 1825 to 1835. This lovely set is in good antique condition. The wear to gilt is notable but not very extensive, considering the age. No major damage such as cracks, chips or repairs noted. Some production imperfections and tiny scabs and wear on foot (cup and saucer).
