Nippon Hallmark Info- M-in-Wreath, hand-painted ("M" stands for importer,Morimura Bros.); found in green, blue, magenta & gold.Mark used since 1911. Nippon-The word used in the back stamp of famous Asian china, "Nippon," simply means "Japan." Nippon china was produced for export to the United States beginning in 1865, when the country ended its long period of commercial isolation, and ending in 1921, when the United States enforced the McKinley Tariff act which prohibited the import of items which were not plainly marked, stamped, branded or labeled in legible English words. As Nippon was considered the Japanese word for the country of origin, "Japan" being the English equivalent, the period of the Nippon china mark came to an end. In the history of Japanese porcelain marks, "Nippon mark" is a term drawn from a relatively short period in the long history of Japan and Japanese pottery. It refers to the period roughly between 1890 and 1920. This was the time when America started requiring that such goods be marked with the country of origin and Japan began exporting its porcelain in a large way to the west - hence term "Nippon" in the Phoenician alphabet. In 1922, The United States began requiring the term "Japan" instead of the term " Measures about 5 1/4" L x 4" W x 1" H **Shipping - Handling & Disclaimer** -Shipping is through USPS. -All Shipping orders includes tracking number. -*I can usually combine shipping for buyers who want to buy more than one item.
