Description: I’m very excited to offer this exceptional 1890’s RESTORED victorian era, transitional style combination gas/electric entry pendant hall fixture! Gas/electric combination lights are an interesting enigma in antique lighting - only having been produced for 30ish years or so, and they’re quite coveted today. At a time when electricity was still wildly expensive and wholly unreliable, it was prudent to ensure that one could still light the home if the power went out, and return to gas lighting. These pieces were considered to be cutting edge technology in their day. As gas lighting today is completely obsolete, the components of this pendant that were once illuminated by a flame have now been converted over to electric, and it can be enjoyed to its full potential with two standard base light bulbs. Edison style bulbs (not included with purchase) look fantastic in this light. This fixture has a nice, even patina that is reddish brown in places, and golden/brassy in others. It reads as an antique finish which has not been overly polished. Designed incorporating an interesting pear shaped harp design with curly-Q finials, which perfectly frame the opalescent shade inside, this piece is playful, yet, elegant - typical of the era. The crimped, swirled, opalescent glass shades are in fantastic antique condition with no flaws of note outside of some very minor fitter-end flea bites. They are an excellently matched set, and both shades have some embedded particulate matter left over from the manufacturing process - that’s how you know they’re old! The upper shade is a 4” fitter, and the lower shades is a 2 1/4” fitter. The brass smoke bell is not original to the fixture, but is a vintage replacement that has been polished and lacquered. This fixture has been newly rewired and retains its original electric socket, and it operates smoothly with a nice, satisfying click, while the socket that replaced the gas jet is modern, and keyless. The mounting hardware is all new and will mate to a modern electrical box with ease. The canopy is approximately 4.5” in diameter and should amply cover a modern box as well. This piece is appropriately scaled for a hall, vestibule, or foyer application, and measures 41” long to the bottom of the lower shade and 12” wide at the apex of the curvature of the harp.
