Description: This item is the pictured wood relief from China. As shown, there are two scenes which appear to be a scholar or some kind of ruler or royalty. It seems to be a kind of redwood with perhaps gold paint or gilding which has largely worn off. My pictures may not fully convey the depth of the piece since it is somewhat over one inch in "thickness" and that allows a nicely "front" part with somewhat rounded figures and then another background section behind, giving a nice 3-d type result. Condition is very good -- nothing broken, etc. I don't have information on the background of this piece but know it was from China some decades ago and it certainly doesn't seem like anything made recently, undoubtedly not something just for tourists. My guess is that it is much older and was perhaps part of a structure or kind of "screen", possibly something in a temple or building of some special purpose. In any event, it is certainly an attractive piece and probably a good buy at the listed price.
