Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare February 1965 playbill (with a number of newspaper clippings) from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the ANTHONY NEWLEY and LESLIE BRICUSSE musical "THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT - THE SMELL OF THE CROWD" at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. (The production would open May 16th, 1965 at the Shubert Theatre in New York City for a run of 232 performances.) ..... The musical starred ANTHONY NEWLEY and CYRIL RITCHARD and featured SALLY SMITH, JOYCE JILLISON, GILBERT PRICE, GEORGE HIROSE, MURRAY TANNENBAUM, RAWLEY BATES, LORI BROWNE, JILL CHODER, GLORIA CHU, KAY COLE, MARLENE DELL, BONI ENTEN, MITZI FEINN, PAMELA GRUEN, LINDA RAE HAGER, CYNDI HOWARD, LAURA MICHAELS, DEBBIE PALMER and HEATHER TAYLOR ..... CREDITS: Book, Music and Lyrics by LESLIE BRICUSSE and ANTHONY NEWLEY; Sets designed by SEAN KENNY; Costumes designed by FREDDY WITTOP; Choreographed by GILLIAN LYNNE; Directed by ANTHONY NEWLEY; Produced by DAVID MERRICK ..... DETAILS: The 54 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors and members of the creative team but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos. Includes a number of clipped newspaper reviews, articles and ads related to the show (shown in the last three scanned images) ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes the song "Put 'Im In the Box" which was cut during tryouts ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a volume number written in pencil in the top left corner of the cover and minor toning to a couple inside pages from the newspaper articles, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
