Description: Andronicus II Palaeologus, with Andronicus III. AV Gold Hyperpyron: Constantinople mint. Struck 1325-1328. Half-length figure of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary), orans, within city walls with four towers / Christ standing facing, crowning Andronicus II and Andronicus III, both wearing loros, kneeling to left and right respectively (21mm) This beautiful coin is ~700 years old and is an amazing piece of history. Andronikos II Palaiologos, Latinized Andronicus II Palaeologus (25 March 1259 – 13 February 1332) was declared co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire in 1261 after his father Michael VIII recovered Constantinople from the Latin Empire crusader state. The obverse of this coin features the Virgin Mary while the reverse depicts Andronicus II and his grandson Andronicus III with Jesus Christ in between the 2 emperors. While depicted on this coin as equals, Andronikos II ultimately disowned his grandson, prompting a civil war that raged until 1328. When the war ended Andronikos III entered Constantinople in triumph and Andronikos II was forced to abdicate and enter a religious order. Andronikos II died as a monk at Constantinople in 1332. *All coins are unconditionally guaranteed authentic. Coins are sourced only from highly reputable dealers.
