Description: An Accurate and Impartial Narrative of the War by an Officer of the Guards: in two volumes (in one book) comprising the campaigns of 1793, 1794, and the retreat through Holland to Westphalia in 1795. Containing the Second Edition of A Poetical Sketch of the Campaign of 1793, revised and considerably enlarged. Also a Similar Sketch of the Campaign of 1794; to which is added A Narrative of the Retreat of 1795. 2 volumes bound in one. Two hand-colored aquatint frontispieces and four black & white etched plates. A very rare and historically valuable work. Not in Cockle, BM Catalogue, nor listed by Halket and Laing. Apparently very uncommon. In blue cloth covers. The front cover has come detached from the spine as have the first 3 pages, Rear Cover still attached but feels weak. Name plate to interior of front cover (appropriately for the Army & Navy Club). Inscribed (from 1798) on first title page and on title page of 2nd volume. Two beautiful hand coloured frontispieces at the beginning of each volume. The black and white etchings were apparently originally produced on the battlefields. Tanning to end papers, but internal pages are largely clean with the odd grubby mark. Vol 1, 117pp. Vol 2, 114pp. Size 7.5x5". Please view photos to get a clear indication of the condition.
