Description: This Glass Snuff Jar is marked AMERICAN SNUFF CO OF NEW JERSEYPAT JULY 16 1872PATENTED JANUARY 18 1876 on the top, and P LORILLARD Co on the bottom It is dark amber glass with an unusual wire / threaded closure The patents are on the wire / threaded closurewhich are described as for use on fruit / canning jars,and our research indicates that the original labels on these jars encouraged housewives to keep them for canning(see pictures for copies of the patents, provided for informational purposes only) Lids featuring two patent dates are hard to come by Our research also reveals that the jar dates to between 1900,the formation of American Snuff Co. and their acquisition of the Lorillard Co.'s snuff business, and 1911 when American Snuff Co was broken up because they were found to be a monopoly.We believe the date range can be further narrowed to between 1900 and 1909 becausethe listed patents were controlled by the Cohansey Glass Mfg.
