Description: BORCHERT FIELDBorchert Field, once known as Athletic Park, was a historic ballpark in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that stood from 1888 until its demolition in 1953. Located on the city’s north side, Borchert Field was a modest, intimate stadium with wooden bleachers and a quirky, asymmetrical layout, featuring a short right field that made it a hitter-friendly park. It could seat around 13,000 fans and was named after Otto Borchert, a beloved Milwaukee baseball executive who passed away in 1927. Despite its relatively small size, the field became a central hub for baseball in the region during the early 20th century. The most prominent team to call Borchert Field home was the Milwaukee Brewers, a minor league team that played in the American Association from 1902 to 1952. This iteration of the Brewers was highly successful and developed a devoted local fan base. The team won eight American Association championships during its time at Borchert Field, often drawing large crowds for both weekday and weekend games. The Brewers became a stepping stone for many players who would go on to have notable major league careers, including the great Al Simmons, a Hall of Fame outfielder who played for the Brewers in the early 1920s before starring for the Philadelphia Athletics. In addition to the Brewers, Borchert Field hosted Negro League teams, including the Milwaukee Bears, who briefly played there in 1923. The Bears were part of the Negro National League, though their time in Milwaukee was short-lived. Borchert Field also saw football action, as it occasionally hosted local football teams and even some early Green Bay Packers games in the 1930s.The ballpark’s days came to an end in 1953 when the Milwaukee Braves (MLB) moved into the newly constructed Milwaukee County Stadium, which signaled the end of Borchert Field’s era. The field was demolished later that year, but its legacy lives on as a cherished part of Milwaukee's rich baseball history. Unused 4" x 6" continental size b&w chrome postcard.
