Description: Amelia Mary Earhart [1887 1937] was an American aviation pioneer who was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart's historic flight took place on June 17, 1928 for which she was awarded the U.S Distinguished Flying Cross. Earhart set numerous aviation records during her short career, was a noted author who wrote numerous articles about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the founding of the Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. On June 1, 1937, Earhart set off for her second attempt at a round-the-world flight which would cover over 29,000 miles in her modified Lockheed Vega aircraft. On July 2, 1937, Earhart and her co-pilot disappeared somewhere around Howland Island which is near New Guinea. Earhart, her copilot and their aircraft were never located.
