The present, very beautiful, detailed and finely crafted version in Bronze was made based on the model by Pierre Julien. The sculptor used classic antique depictions of Venus as his model, but Julienne emphasized the sensual, naturally casual posture of the Nymph through the naturalistic design and the draped cloth. The present variant is rare. The delicate casting was carried out by the Paris Foundry Association. Excellent quality, original condition with elaborate fine chasing that emphasizes the different textures. Due to age, the patina is somewhat irregular. On the side of the base the foundry mark “Société des Bronzes” and the mark “Rd. Sauvage.” Size: cm Weight: 5.6kg In 1785, Louis XVI commissioned the sculptor Pierre Julien with the design of La Laiterie, the dairy building at Rambouillet Castle, the property of Queen Marie-Antoinette. The extraordinary ensemble of sculptures, marble reliefs and medallions illustrated the joys of rural life. The larger than life figure of the Amalthea, made of white marble, was located between large stones at the end of a room designed to resemble a grotto. The depiction of the Nymph Amalthea sitting on a rock is one of his most famous works. The original, which forms the basis for this reduced version, is now in the sculpture collection of the Musée du Louvre (RF 2309). A few years later, Pierre Julien made the reduction himself, which served as a template for versions in porcelain (by the royal factory in Sévres), Bronze or Terrakotta . Reduction Sauvage The French engineer and brilliant inventor Frédéric Sauvage (1786 - 1857) developed a physionometer with which one could measure the head and facial dimensions and prepare for the production of a bust. Another invention ca. scaling objects for reproduction was his reductor pantograph. From 1834 he continued to develop his physionometer. This meant that busts could be produced mechanically directly from the original. Sauvage joined in 1844 Achilles Collas together with him ca. further develop and use the Procédé Sauvage reproduction method. Achille Collas had already developed a process ca. reproducing three-dimensional objects in any desired size. He worked with the Paris foundry since 1838 F. Barbedienne together.
