The α-type Stirling engine does not have a separate gas distribution cylinder; instead, it features a set of cylinders that are structurally identical to the cooling side cylinder, both participating in heat exchange and work generation. Since there are two independent and identically structured cylinders, one cylinder is responsible for generating thermal energy while the other is responsible for cooling. Simultaneously, both sets of cylinders generate power. Due to their complete independence, the two sets of cylinders exhibit a significant temperature difference. When the temperature on the heating side reaches as high as 600 degrees, the temperature in the cooling side cylinder can still maintain around 50 degrees after 20 minutes of continuous operation. This results in a temperature difference exceeding 500 degrees, which serves as a sustained and sufficient source of power output and is a key factor in the performance of the Stirling engine.The connecting rods of the two sets of cylinders are not directly linked but are instead connected through two gear systems, designed with a gear ratio of 2:1. The crankshaft operates at a speed of 1000 RPM, while the flywheel, with a diameter of 78 mm and weighing 155 grams, rotates at 2000 RPM. The considerable inertia of the flywheel enhances the stability of machine operation. This design is similar to that used in single-cylinder diesel engines, which utilize such mechanisms to mitigate intense vibrations and achieve smooth operation.To maximize the lifespan of the cylinders and pistons, we have chosen GCR15 bearing steel as the raw material for the cylinder liners and piston sleeves. After being processed with a CNC lathe, these components undergo heat treatment to increase hardness to 58-62 HRC, followed by grinding treatment to achieve a precision of approximately ±0.005mm. The pistons, while performing reciprocating motion within the cylinders, must also effectively seal the gas within the cylinders, which is crucial for te precision of the Stirling engine model.The design features a large flywheel, double cylinders, double pistons, dual gear systems, brass connecting rods, a crankshaft, and two 10 mm aluminum alloy brackets. Each of the two sets of cylinders is fitted with a cylinder liner that has a wall thickness of 2.5 mm.To ensure the machine operates as smoothly and quietly as possible, the entire M20-W-01 model utilizes 14 precision bearings, while the M20-T model employs as many as 30 bearings.The M20-T features a vertical cylinder design, benefiting from the large surface area of the vertical cylinder that enhances heat absorption. In this model, the cooling cylinder volume is designed to be larger than that of the heating cylinder, promoting rapid cooling of the air at high temperatures, thereby creating a larger temperature differential.One of the main advantages of vertical cylinders is that they minimize the vertical pressure exerted by the pistons on the cylinder walls during reciprocating motion. This design is also why most household four-cylinder automotive engines employ a vertical configuration.The M20-T similarly adopts a separated design for the hot and cold cylinders, with stainless steel thermal insulation plates used for segregation.
