Description: On offer, we have an original etching by American artist Allen Lewis. This portrait of an unknown woman has Lewis' signature "A" on the right and is signed at the bottom in pencil "3-3" and "Allen Lewis". The etching measures 12" X 9 1/2" with the matte 20" X 16". About the artist: Arthur Allen Lewis (1878-1957) is well known for his illustrations and etchings. Born in Mobile Alabama, he studied under Jean-Leon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He began etching in 1895 and his works were accepted at the Paris salons starting in 1900. In the early 20th century, Lewis returned to New York where he specialized in the design of bookplates and illustrated books for Walt Whitman, Charles Brooke, Honore de Balzac and more authors. If "3-3" is a date, this portrait would have been from his days in Paris. This is in very good condition. The print is bold and clear. The paper has toned a bit and there is some light foxing in the margins. The matte is thin, but protective. As I am not an expert on art, please view my photographs for more description. This is from my friend who is moving to a much smaller home and parting with many of his treasures. I will be happy to answer any questions and, of course, combine your shipping when possible.
