( MBFX5 ) Printmaker; worked in woodcut, drypoint and etching; born Mobile, Alabama; studied with George Bridgman at the Art Students League in Buffalo, New York and in Paris from 1894 with Jean-Leon Geroma at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, his drypoint portrait of Boardman Robinson was included in the Paris Salon of 1900; returned to the USA 1902 and concentrated on wood engraving bookplates; Alfred Steiglitz held an exhibition of his work at Gallery 291 in 1909; won a bronze medal at the St Louis Exposition 1904 and gold at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco where 23 of his works were shown; awarded Noyes prize by the Brooklyn Society of Etchers 1917 and the Logan prize by the Chicago Society of Etchers; selected by Joseph Pennell to teach woodblock printing at the Art Students League 1924-32, then taught at New School for Social Research; elected Academician by National Academy of Design 1935; died Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
