Description: Ecce Homo (1512) from the Engraved Passion series. 19hcentury heliogravure on Arches laid paper by Charles Amand-Durand (1831-1905). Image: 4 1/2 x 2 7/8 in. (11.5 x 7.4 cm.) Sheet: 8 1/8 x 53/8 in. (20.7 x 13.7 cm.). Excellent condition. The Engraved Passion is considered one of Dürer’s masterpieces in the graphic arts. He held the series in high esteem, selling it for more than double the price of his larger Woodcut Passion series. During his travels, he gifted these sets to notable and influential figures, including Margaret of Austria and Erasmus of Rotterdam. Amand Durand created his heliogravures based on the finest early impressions from prestigious collections such as those of Edmond de Rothschild, Eugene Dutuit, Emile Galichon, Lemarié, Firmin-Didot, the British Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale, and the Fitzwilliam Museum. Many collectors favored Durand’s heliogravures over the worn impressions from original plates. Philip Gilbert Hamerton, author of Etching and Etchers, praised Durand’s work, stating, “They are of the same size as the original etchings, which they resemble closely, and are incomparably superior to the poor impressions from the original plates themselves." The etcher Joseph Pennell similarly remarked, “Amand Durand produced the finest photogravures because he was an artist. No mere photographic or mechanical engraver could match him.” Regarding photogravures, Pennell noted, “The most intriguing work was likely done by Amand Durand, whose copies of Rembrandt and Dürer, printed on old paper, were so convincing that even the most discerning authorities were misled.”
