The Cuban Poster Gallery is delighted to offer AFRICA DAY, an extremely rare, original 1977 Cuban solidarity poster that salutes the annual AFRICA DAY that is celebrated on May 25 in many countries in Africa and around the world. AFRICA DAY commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity, which was formed on May 25, 1963 to promote strong relations among independent African nations, as well as to oppose apartheid and colonialism. This bold Cuban offset poster was printed in 1977 by the Havana-based Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa & Latin America (OSPAAAL), which promotes Cuba's solidarity with countries and revolutionary movements in the Third World. Like many OSPAAAL posters, the title of the graphic is offered in multiple languages -- in this case, English, Spanish and French. The poster was designed by VICTOR MANUEL NAVARRET (born 1947), one of the major Cuban graphic designers of the 1970s and 1980s. Navarret's work can be found in major collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum's in London, the Library of Congress's in Washington D.C. and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's, as well as in numerous books about Cuban and world political poster art. This rarely seen poster, which was once in the OSPAAAL archives in Havana (see the official archives stamp on the back of the graphic), measures approximately 29 by 18 inches (75 x 44 cm). This is the only copy of this poster that we have ever had for sale. Overall condition of this poster is Fair with imperfections that include creases, as well as numerous tears and missing pieces on the borders. The good news is that the main image of the poster is in really good shape. In short, this poster is a survivor that has likely survived poor handling, high humidity and insect damage while in storage for many decades in subtropical Havana. Buy with 100 percent confidence: all posters purchased from the Cuban Poster Gallery on eBay can be returned for any reason within 30 days. (How would we frame this poster? One of two ways. We would either have the poster framed with a mat that would cover the obvious imperfections on the borders...or...we would frame the poster with a mat that would allow these imperfections to be plainly visible -- thereby celebrating the fact that this 40-plus-year-old graphic has survived to become part of a collection outside of Cuba.) Your original Cuban AFRICA DAY solidarity poster will be securely packed in a sturdy tube and shipped FREE to U.S. addresses by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS with delivery confirmation. For international buyers (outside of the United States), eBay will calculate the cost of shipping and any required Customs duties and taxes.
