Published by Antiquarian Press Ltd, New York in 1959. This is a reprint of the 1883 edition. Limited to 750 copies. This is copy number 58. Blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Gilt to the top page edges. 706 pages, Illustrated with 4 plates from portraits on steel. This book gives a contemporary history of the 5th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army in the 19th century. Part First (Narrative) details the regiment's operations from 1855-83. Part Second gives the military records of the officers. Part Third (Appendix) includes lists of various ranks of officers, battle record, honor roll and much more. Founded in 1855 as the 2nd U.S. Cavalry in Louisville, Kentucky, the unit saw their first action during the Indian Wars under the command of Col. Albert Sidney Johnston. Prior to the Civil War the regiment came under the command of Robert E. Lee. The unit was divided internally during the Civil War, and the cavalrymen loyal to the union were redesignated as the 5th Cavalry, taking part in many great battles of the war. the 5th later served in Spanish-American War in Florida, Cuba and Puerto Rico, and patrolled the Mexican border throughout the Mexican Revolution and WWI. Condition: Very good. Binding is tight, no loose or torn pages. Pages are clean and unmarked. Hinges are sound. Shelf wear to the cover. On the front cover, there is wear that shows the board on the top right corner and bottom right corner. Sunning to the spine and also a soiled area on the spine.
