Emily Hitchcock Terry was the gifted daughter of a highly intellectual and artistic Massachusetts family. An early graduate of Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts she began her formal study of art at Cooper Union in NYC in 1865 where her paintings were influenced by the pre-Raphaelite movement. The year 1872 brought her to Minnesota where she began painting and collecting the flora she saw. Her collection of over 140 paintings are scientific documents of the flora of several areas of the USA and had remained totally unrecognized for more than 100 years. The beautiful reproductions of her work in this volume give the reader a first view of Terry's herbarium.Book is in very good/near excellent condition. Some very, very light foxing to the very tips of the outer page edges. All pages are clean and clear with so soil tears or notations. Binding is strong. Book was purchased, shelved and has remained unread and barely opened. Measures 7 1/2 by 11 1/2. Beautiful and delicately done color illustrations throughout..with perhaps some of the plants she once painted are now lost to history.
