Church 108 Pages, PLUS Inspirational color photos throughout the book. Includes a brief analysis with footnotes.Larger, easy-to-read text. Before God leads us to our first love, our twin flame, and back to the garden of paradise, there are prerequisites. If you are serious about living a good life, you will want to read this book! This is a very ancient story of a spiritual journey by a man named Hermas. After repenting of his sins, an angel in the form of shepherd came to him for the rest of his days to teach him and expound uponwhat Jesus had taught. Hermas wrote all of the teachings in the book, which include detailed descriptionsof his visions, twelve commandments, and 10 similitudes (parables). It's a very interesting book andit should be added back into the Bible for the value of its teachings. It gives great insight into the originalteachings of Jesus and makes a great book for study groups, Sunday school, and individual study. The author of The Shepherd of Hermas is not known for certain. There is speculation that he was Hermasas mentioned in one of the Pauline epistles, or he may have been the son of Hermas with the same name. Some have speculated he could have been Hermes (also mentioned by Paul). The book was writtenbetween 90 to 110 A.D., and it was initially considered Scripture. “At the very earliest period it wasundoubtedly regarded as on a level with the canonical books of the New Testament, being distinctlyquoted by Irenaeus as Scripture” (Hoole, 1870). The Shepherd of Hermas was very popular amongthe people for several centuries and was often read in the early churches. The Codex Sinaiticus,or Sanai Bible, which dates approximately to the mid-fourth century, A.D., contains a Greek versionof The Shepherd of Hermas. According to Wikipedia, the Sanai Bible “is one of the earliest andmost complete manuscripts of the Bible and contains the oldest complete copy of the New Testament.”However, later The Shepherd of Hermas was omitted from the canon as it gradually fell out of favoramong the church fathers. It has been criticized for various reasons, although not for anything substantial. The book does not mention Christianity but does criticize some the practices pf early churches. It seems to be a personal testimony of the writer as he follows the teachings of Jesus. The book is fascinating in that it details the spiritual path of the writer, Hermas. It begins with him beinggiven divine visions and falling into repentance (the first part of the book). In the last vision an angel inthe form of a shepherd appears as his companion and teacher who will stay by his side his entire life.Hermas is to write down everything the shepherd teaches him. This comprises the rest of the book. Thesecond part of the book contains detailed descriptions of twelve commandments and various contexts andapplications to guide people’s lives. The third part of the book contains what are called “Similitudes,” andare similar in style to the parables taught by Jesus. The Ninth Similitude, “Concerning the Building of theTower,” describes metaphorically in great detail how God builds His church. Some researchers believe it to be a genuine account of the experiences of the writer. Others believe it tobe fictional. I tend to believe the former based on my own personal experiences with the phenomenapresented. The knowledge contained in this book, which provides great guidance for everyday life, hasbeen lost in many of the churches of today. It’s wonderfully written and fun to read. It needs to be broughtback into the light for its value as an introductory guide to living a spiritual and more holy life.I have added inspirational photos throughout the book to add interest.ReferencesHoole, Charles H.
