9/25/1973 Chicago Bulls Philadelphia 76ers Ticket Stub Preseason Doug Collins

Description: You are looking at a full unused ticket for the preseason game between the Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers which took place on September 25, 1973 at the Horton Field House on the campus of Illinois State University. The below article implies this was the Bulls second preseason game (of eight total for the Bulls), and both games involved the same two teams. This would either be the pro debut or the second professional game for #1 overall pick Doug Collins. However, the only article I could find is from the Daily Illini, which is decidedly Chicago Bulls-centric: "Dick Motta believes his Chicago Bulls are progressing faster than past seasons even though perennial all-star forward Bob Love is holding out. And Motta wasn’t gloating just because his club had taken its second straight exhibition game, a 114-104 victory Tuesday over the hapless Philadelphia 76ers at Normal. There are other valid reasons, such as Love’s replacement (Howard Porter) blistering the nets for 27 points. There’s also the presence of three healthy centers in addition to a tightened defense with the acquisition of forward John Hummer from Buffalo. “We’re a little ahead of schedule,” Motta assessed. If Love doesn’t play, we, can move (Jerry) Sloan up to forward. “We’re pretty much set everywhere; it would take someone exceptional to crack our starting lineup right now. We’re on the verge of going all the way,” he added confidently. But don’t take Motta wrong; he wants Love to return as much as anyone else. “We went without Tom Boerwinkle last season,” Motta said. “He was someone I felt we couldn’t possibly win without. If Love remains a holdout, I’ll just have to treat the situation as if he were on the injured list.” Love is on the second leg of a five-year contract valued at a reported $140,000 per annum but currently wishes to renegotiate. Motta said he believes Love has to do what he feels is right, but added. He’s either going to work with his present contract or not at all.” “Love is as much a part of this organization as anyone. He helped get us where we are and we sure don’t want to lose him. “The only way we would trade him would be if we could obtain someone of equal caliber or better--someone like a Spencer Haywood or a Sidney Wickes.” The Bulls head coach-general manager would just as soon start the season now and forego the remaining six exhibition games. Better still, Motta would like to see all exhibition eliminated. “I like games to count. Exhibitions are nothing more than a classroom situation,” Motta said. However, some of the pupils are learning fast, especially the muscular 6-1 Porter from Villanova. The third-year forward meshed nine of 12 shots from the floor and cashed in on nine of ten from the free throw line. Veteran Chet ‘the Jet’ Walker from Bradley responded to a friendly ovation from the 6,000 fans by canning seven of 11 field goal attempts and adding four-for-four from the foul line while playing only 22 minutes. The Bulls raced off to an early 6-0 lead and were never headed. The 76ers managed to knot the score at 28-28 in the second quarter but then never came closer than 84-83 with 7:52 left. The Bulls biggest lead came when Porter, Sloan and guard Bobby Weise all tallied within a 30-second span to assume a 66-46 advantage with 8:07 showing in the third quarter. Other Bulls in double figures were Weise with 15, Frank Russell 12, and Roland Garrett and Wendall Hudson 11 each. Hummer and ‘Stormin’ Norman Van Lier did not play. Hummer is nursing a pulled groin muscle while Van Lier is in his home town of Beaver, Penn. to be sentenced for a conviction of resisting arrest earlier this year."
