Description: This is a rare ticket stub to the Fifty-Sixth Annual ANTOINETTE PERRY AWARDS ceremony held on June 2nd, 2002 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and a ticket for the TONY GALA RECEPTION held in the Summer Garden at Rockefeller Center following the Awards ceremony. The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® got their start in 1947 when the Wing established an awards program to celebrate excellence in the theatre. Named for Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing who had passed away the previous year, the Tony Awards made their official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6th, 1947. Vera Allen, Perry's successor as chairwoman of the Wing, presided over an evening that included dining, dancing, and a program of entertainment. Among those honored at the 2001-02 Tony's with acting awards were JOHN LITHGOW (Sweet Smell of Success), SUTTON FOSTER (Thoroughly Modern Millie), SHULER HENSLEY (Oklahoma!), HARRIET HARRIS (Thoroughly Modern Millie), ALAN BATES (Fortune's Fool), LINDSAY DUNCAN (Private Lives), FRANK LANGELLA (Fortune's Fool) and KATIE FINNERAN (Noises Off). The award for "Best Musical" went to "THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE", "Best Book of a Musical" to GREG KOTIS (Urinetown the Musical) and "Best Original Score" to MARK HOLLMANN and GREG KOTIS (Urinetown the Musical). "Best Revival of a Play" went to Noel Coward's "PRIVATE LIVES", "Best Revival of a Musical" to Stephen Sondheim's "INTO THE WOODS", "Best Play" went to EDWARD ALBEE (The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?), "Best Choreography" to ROB ASHFORD (Thoroughly Modern Millie), "Best Direction of a Musical" to JOHN RANDO (Urinetown the Musical) and "Best Direction of a Play" to MARY ZIMMERMAN (Metamorphoses). A Special Tony Award for Best Theatrical Event went to "ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY" and Special Tony Honors for Lifetime Achievement were presented to ROBERT WHITEHEAD and JULIE HARRIS. The hosts of the Fifty-Sixth Annual Tony Awards were Bernadette Peters and Gregory Hines and presenting awards were Gina Gershon, Savion Glover, Elaine Stritch, Patrick Wilson, Cynthia Nixon, Paul Rudd, Kate Burton, Harold Prince, Blythe Danner, John Leguizamo, Jason Biggs, Alicia Silverstone, Ralph Fiennes, Chris O'Donnell, Mary-Louise Parker, Edie Falco, Stanley Tucci, Anne Heche, Bill Pullman, Liam Neeson, Natasha Richardson, Chita Rivera, Calista Flockhart, Jerry Orbach, Doris Roberts, Hugh Jackman, Joanna Gleason, Whoopi Goldberg and Mary Tyler Moore. DETAILS: This Tony Awards ticket stub measures 4" X 2" inches. The Gala Reception ticket measures 3 5/8" X 5 3/4" inches, has a gold metallic surface on the front and a plain white backside. CONDITION: With the exception of a red ink mark on the front side of the ticket and a few light surface marks on the front of the Gala Reception ticket, this rare set is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. These items will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard for safe transport.
