Description: 50 Salle de Jeu Chez Satan Diableries Adolphe Block B.K Tissue Stereoview c1868 Antique Pin Pricked Hand Colored Tissue Stereoview Condition - Please refer to photos to assess, Tissue views are fragile and often have small tears or separation from the mounts. The Diableries, which translates roughly as ‘Devilments’, show the riotous goings-on in Hell, presided over by the Devil himself, and peopled with a lively cast of skeletons, demons and ghouls. They were originally release by Adolphe Block (B.K.) in Paris. The scenes were intricately sculpted as clay vignettes which depict scenes of daily life in Hell. A total of 72 scenes were on a tabletop and then photographed to be viewed through a stereoviewer providing a realistic 3d appearance. The three known sculptors were Louis Alred Habert, Pieere Adolph Hennetier & Louis Edmond Cougny. The Diableries were hand-coloured on the reverse, which is only seen when held up to light, as the scene transforms from day to night and the colors suddenly burst into life. As a finishing touch, the eyes of the skeletons and other creatures were pierced and dabbed with colored gelatin, causing them to glow red. There is a fabulous book about these views that was released from the London Stereoscopic Company in 2013, this book provides a background to these views along with a pictural index of all cards in each series.
