Description: This Listing is for ONE NEW Sheet of 50 Rainbow Love 22¢ Stamps from 1985.Excellent Condition. Mint Stamps. Original Gum. From a Smoke-free and Pet-free Environment. On April 17, 1985, the U.S. Postal Service issued these special 22¢ Rainbow Love gummed stamps in Hollywood, CA - the 4th issue in the popular Love Series. The first day ceremony program was held on "the Love Boat" set at Warner Studios. The stamp artist, Corita Kent of Boston, MA, was furious at this choice of venue by the U.S. Postal Service, and refused to attend by way of protest - saying that was not the kind of love she meant. She said, at the time of her boycott, that she did not approve of the "Love Boat" show because "the TV definition of love is nothing very deep, and everything gets resolved in an hour. I think it's dangerous to educate people that way - that love happens that fast, that troubles are resolved that easily." She had wanted the stamp to be unveiled at the United Nations. The stamp's contemporary design incorporates vibrant shades of six colors - purple, blue, green, red, orange and yellow - with the word "Love" written in bold, purple letters. Corita's response, in her next artwork (very similar to the Love stamp) was "Love is Hard Work", with these words under the color slashes (different shades of the same stamp colors and in a different order). This "Rainbow Swash" design was previously used in 1971 by the Boston Gas Company for one of their gas tanks when Corita Kent received a commission from them; and her design became the largest copyrighted artwork in the world. The enormous rainbow - six simple strokes of color arching across the 150-foot-high gas tank - has been a Boston landmark ever since.
