Not a stock image!(image may appear larger on your device) Pin Oak (Quercus Palustris) is a versatile and valuable tree native to the central and eastern United States. Pin Oaks are hardy, adaptable, and low-maintenance trees that thrive in tough soil conditions and offer stunning seasonal color and ecological benefits. They’re well-suited for urban environments and diverse landscapes, making them a popular choice for both ornamental and functional purposes.Characteristics:Size: Typically, Pin Oaks grow to a height of 50–70 feet and spread 30–40 feet wide. They can reach full maturity in about 40 to 50 years, though they continue growing for much longer.Shape & Foliage: They have a narrow, pyramidal shape when young, which broadens into a more rounded or oval crown as they mature. The leaves are 4–6 inches long with 5–9 deep lobes. The dark green foliage turns vibrant red, yellow, and orange in the fall, making it a striking feature in autumn landscapes.Acorns: Like many oaks, Pin Oaks produce acorns that are a food source for wildlife, including birds, squirrels, and deer. However, their acorns are smaller compared to other oak varieties, which can make them less appealing to some animals.Soil & Light: Pin Oaks are adaptable to a wide range of soils, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral soils but can tolerate some variation. They do best in full sun, which helps promote strong growth and vibrant fall colors.Drought & Pollution Resistance: This oak variety is particularly drought-tolerant once established, and it can handle urban environments better than some other oaks. It's resistant to air pollution, which makes it a great choice for city landscapes.Wildlife Value: As mentioned, the acorns provide sustenance to wildlife, and the tree itself offers shelter for birds and other creatures. The dense canopy can also offer shade and shelter for smaller plants beneath it.Potential Uses:Landscape Tree: Due to its rapid growth and attractive fall colors, Pin Oak is often used in both residential and commercial landscapes. It's also effective as a street tree, especially in urban areas where pollution or compacted soil might otherwise limit tree growth.Erosion Control: With its deep root system, the Pin Oak is effective at stabilizing soil and preventing erosion, especially in areas where soil quality may be poor or erodible.Care & Maintenance:Pruning: Regular pruning is important, especially for young trees, to maintain a strong structure and remove any damaged or diseased wood.Pests/Diseases: Pin Oaks are relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but they can occasionally be affected by issues such as oak wilt, leaf spot, or aphids. Proper care and monitoring can help minimize these problems.Planting Instructions; Stratification (Cold Treatment)Cold Stratification: Oak seeds require a period of cold dormancy to germinate. To mimic winter conditions, place the acorns in a plastic bag with some damp sand or peat moss. Store them in the refrigerator (not the freezer) for about 30-60 days. This process breaks dormancy and triggers germination in the spring.Planting Depth: After stratification, remove the acorns from the fridge and plant them in small pots or directly in the ground if temperatures are warm enough (spring is ideal). Plant each acorn about 1–2 inches deep, with the pointed end facing down.Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably slightly acidic, with good water retention. Acorns should not sit in waterlogged soil.We can't predict everything, so please contact us if you do have any issues with your acorn order, and we will gladly replace them for you. Please note, as with all natural products, nature happens! When acorns age, they tend to crack. Our acorns are fresh, so they should not have any issues for several months, but if they dry out too much, they will crack. Please store them properly by keeping them in a sealed container, free from moisture, in a cool dark location. Some acorns may contain an acorn-weevil, a small white worm that thrives on the nut-meat of the acorn. If you do come across a weevil Do Not Be Alarmed! They burrow out of the acorn in winter time, after having lived their whole lives inside of the acorn (they are born on the caps). We try to sort through and find any of these nuts, but some slip past. Weevils are harmless - please feed them to your pet birds or reptiles 🙂 Prepare to plant these acorns in Spring of 2025. We can only guarantee viability for the next season - Long-term storage of Oak nuts / acorns is not advised. Thank you.
