Description: 'Reine des Vallees’ - The name is French and means 'Queen of the Valleys'. The last photos in this listing show a tray of these I started very easily from seed to fruiting sized within 3 months. I sowed the seeds in a 72 cell tray, kept moderately moist. The flavor of the berries is very wonderfully intense, with a strong strawberry punch to your mouth and then subtle notes of roses and sweet candy. Like other alpine strawberries, these do not produce runners - instead, they clump to form very tidy tufts of magic in about 1 square foot. I love to companion plant these with sweet and wild violets, clovers, and low-growing bulbs (crocus, anemone, wild irises, grape hyacinth). These combinations are magical in mixed early spring lawns, or along woodland edges and bring a compact faerie cottage garden style with a hint of wild to your grow space. 'Reine des Valles' is a very old European cultivar and is the leading producer in Europe for alpine strawberries; it shows great promise and excellent production here in the US. Productivity seems to be as high as Alexandria, with excellent flavor and berry size while bringing more diversity to Red Alpine Strawberry cultivars. Another worthy red alpine to add to your collection of highly productive (and incredibly versatile, useful and delicious!) plants. USDA hardiness zones 4-9 Planting: For strawberry seeds, sow seeds thinly 8-10 weeks before last frost in a fine soilless mix. Press seeds into moist mix and keep moist until plants emerge in 2-3 weeks. Keep soil temperature constantly at 60°F. Transplant to plug trays when true leaves emerge. Transplant outdoors anytime after last frost, 1′ apart. Tolerant to partial shade, and they prefer moist soil. Strawberries are extremely adaptable and are grown in every state in the U.S. They will benefit from mulch such as straw, pine needles, or plastic. They prefer a soil rich in all the basic nutrients with a pH of 6-6.5.If you'd like to see all the plants and seeds I currently have available: Check out my other seeds and plants for sale
