Description: 16oz BLACK WALNUTS 60+ Seeds Nuts Dehusked New Harvest Amish Farm Grown Missouri FRESH from the Fall 2024 harvest and ready for fall planting! A 16 ounce order will yield 60 or more nuts. Our primary black walnut trees produce every other year, so we worked together with our Amish neighbors and bought their harvest! This fresh source of black walnut seeds is ready to plant now or store in a refrigerator until spring planting. Plant 'em or eat 'em! These in-the-shell black walnuts are naturally farm-grown in the Green Hills of Northwest Missouri. The husks has been removed and the seeds cleaned and naturally cured. They remain unpackaged in dry, cool storage until shipment. Our black walnuts are grown from generations-old, mature trees without using chemicals or pesticides. Small traces of dust and husk may remain on the shell. Tips for planting: Juglans Nigra is native to the Eastern United States and grow well in climate zones 4 - 9. Select an area with full sun with moderate moisture and loamy, well-drained soil, such as a hillside. If you plant seeds directly in the ground, lay chicken wire over the seeds to deter scavengers. Plant the floater with the sinkers - it's a numbers game! If you're planting a grove of Black Walnut trees, keep in mind that the further you plant the trees apart from one another, the longer they will produce walnut seeds. Crowded trees may grow taller, but with a smaller crown, and produce fewer nuts over time than widely spaced trees with larger crowns. We're planting our new seedlings 25to 30 feet apart to maximize future nut production. Do you need to cold-stratify the seeds before planting? The best time to plant seeds in the fall is October thru November. If you're planting in the ground (not a planter above ground), the seeds should benefit from the low winter temperatures in the ground before sprouting in the spring (in most regions). The ideal time to plant in the spring is after the last frost, April thru May. You can keep the nuts in a refrigerator for a month or more before springtime planting. Black Walnut trees are excellent shade trees, have aromatic, yellowish-green leaves and are drought-tolerant. The trees produce a fragrant, bright yellow-green, citrus-like husk surrounding the nut, will flower May thru June and fruit in September thru October. They may grow up to 60 to 90 feet in height with a crown spread up to 100 feet. Younger trees may produce walnuts every other year. A mature tree may produce 100s to 1000s of walnuts annually. The hardwood is especially prized for woodworking and the husks have many commercial uses. Maturing groves of Black Walnut trees enhance both natural diversity and land value. Shelled black walnuts are a superfood! Use them in desserts, pies, cakes, muffins, ice cream, salads, protein shakes, smoothies, and more. Black walnuts are low in carbs with 75% more protein than English walnuts. The health benefits and medicinal properties of black walnuts are well-established. They are a good source of antioxidants, high in tannins, and the extracts have antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Black walnuts have a harder shell than English walnuts, but a unique flavor and aroma. Some describe the nut meat as mildly bittersweet, smoky, earthy, and robust.
