You are bidding on about 40 RATTLESNAKE MASTER SEEDS - Eryngium yuccifolium . Commonly called button snake-root , button eryngo , Beargrass and Bear's grass . This is native to the tallgrass prairies of central and eastern North America, from Minnesota east to Ohio and south to Texas and Florida, including a few spots in Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware. This perennial plant is 2-5' tall. The leaves are long and strap-like, rather stiff in texture, and up to 2½' long and 2½" across. The entire plant is bluish or greyish green, and quite hairless. The flowers stalk consists of several prickly balls of flowers that are individually about ½–1" across. These whitish green balls contain numerous small white flowers that are individually surrounded by prickly bracts. A flower consists of 5 white petals, a divided white pistil, and several white stamens with light brown anthers. Each ball of flowers is subtended by a star-like rosette of small leaves. Fruit: The fruit essentially looks the same as the flowers, only darknening to a dull brown and remaining on the stalks for the remainder of the season. They are sometimes gathered and used in dried flower arrangements, but provide equal interest in the winter landscape. Culture Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Prefers dryish, sandy soils. Self-seeds in optimum growing conditions. Plants tend to open up and sprawl if grown in overly fertile soils or in anything less than full sun. This is a tap rooted plant which transplants poorly and is best left undisturbed once established. This is a very odd member of the Carrot family that resembles a yucca or some other desert plant. However, it is a true tallgrass prairie species with a unique appearance. Zone: 3 to 8 Height: 4.00 to 5.00 feet Spread: 2.00 to 3.00 feet Bloom Time: June to September Bloom Description: Greenish-white Sun: Full sun Medicinal use : The plant is diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic (in large doses), expectorant and febrifuge. A tincture of the roots is used in the treatment of female reproductive disorders. The pounded roots are used as a diuretic. An infusion of them is used to reduce fevers.
