He created popular illustrations on board, paper, and canvas, most of which emphasize the female form in a distinctive style descended from Art Deco.Employing a graphic, highly stylized aesthetic, many of Nagel’s best-known works appeared in 1980s issues of Playboymagazine. Born in Dayton, OH on November 25, 1945 he went on to serve in Vietnam before receiving his BFA from California State University in 1969. He began contributing to Playboy magazine in 1976, refining his precise, minimal style, which is often compared to the smooth, clean lines of Art Deco. His figures tended to have black hair, bright white skin, and full-lipped mouths, including the woman in one of his most famous images, the album cover art for Duran Duran’s 1982 album Rio. He died at the age of 38 on February 4, 1984, having suffered a heart attack after participating in a in a 15-minute celebrity "Aerobathon" to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Patrick Nagel (1945 - 1984) is known for his paintings, prints, sculptures, posters and overall craftsmanship during the 1970s and 80s. His style is immediately recognizable due to his personal ideal of the image of women. When one thinks of the artwork of Patrick Nagel, one envisions the depictions of women who are strong yet vulnerable, in the present yet aloof, elegant yet a little on the edge. It is for these reasons that his artwork appeared in Playboy and Architectural Digest magazines as well as gracing the cover of a Duran Duran 1983 album. Because he was attracted to Japanese woodblock prints and their precision, his work also entails a simple form of exactitude. Nagel was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1945 but was raised in the Los Angeles, California area. His education entailed studying fine art at Chouinard Art Institute and at California State University, Fullerton, for which he received a BA in fine arts in 1969 in painting and graphic design. He began his art career by teaching at the Art Center College of Design. As his work in the art world progressed, he ultimately created his own niche in the illustrative arena. Just like his artwork, Patrick Nagel, the man, was intriguing: he was stylish, elegant and quiet yet at the same time created his own entertainment by drinking, smoking, enjoying fast food and staying up all night. Before his premature death at the age of 38 in 1984, he was able to make his mark in the art world in that one can find his artwork in the permanent collections of the Patrick Nagel,America On Wheels, Original Poster print,ITT Canon Deco Suite 1979. , the Smithsonian Institution, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, and the Musee de L’Affiche in Paris.
