These one-of-a-kind doors were salvaged from the former, "Manteno State Hospital," in Manteno, IL. There is so much say about the building and even more to say about the town! Although we didn't pull the doors from the building, we got to tour the town and collect them from the basement of the hospital's former cafeteria. The town has an eerie feel and these doors carry a bit of that essence especially considering that they came from the psychiatric ward. Each door (except for #5) has a metal name tag. We're not sure if that was the patient's name or the name of one of the many patron's of the hospital? All the doors are made of solid pine or Douglas Fir and are painted brown. When most people hear "pine" they think of a cheap, weak, soft wood. New pine hewn from 10 - 20 year old trees don't have the same insect-resistant, rot-resistant, or even fire-resistant qualities that old pine, hewn from trees hundreds of years old have. Old pine is also much harder and stronger than young pine. They all have metal screens: mostly steel but some copper. Although the doors are roughly the same size and design, each door has at least one unique feature that distinguishes from the others. Hardware: We got the doors "as is" and whatever hardware you see in the photos is included. I'm assuming that most people will want to install these on a track and use them as sliding doors, but for anyone who wants them to swing, we have hinges and pulls for sale. * If you would like any of the hardware holes plugged with solid wood, email us for a quote. Condition: Considering their age and their original function, these doors are in great shape. None of the doors need any work to install. They all have cosmetic blemishes (i.e. chips, dents, small breaks, cracked molding, etc.), but that's part of what makes these doors so cool! No door has rot, warp, broken/cracked joints, or any other serious issues. They are strong, heavy, sturdy, and ready for another lifetime of service. We did our best to examine every screen and we didn't find any rips, tears, or holes. These screens are like none you've ever seen--they are strong, like thin chain mail! We're human, so we may have missed a tiny rip or tear, but as you could see from the photos, if there is a rip or tear, it's very unnoticeable. Uneven Widths: The widths of Doors#2, 5, & 8 were unevenly cut by 1/4" - 1/2" most likely to accommodate a warped floor or sagging foundation. We could cut any to an even height/width, cut it narrower/shorter, or even build it up to be wider/taller--email us for a quote. Swing: All of the doors are set up to swing away from the room, towards the left or into the room towards the right. However, we can modify the swing of any door--email us for a quote. Refinish/Repaint: We could refinish, or partially or completely strip a door to prepare it for you to repaint or refinish. We have hundreds of photos of doors we've worked on over the years for reference. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote. Modification: Do you want to make a pair using 2 of these doors? We could modify the doors to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, reverse the swing, plug the hardware holes, etc. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.
