Description: Here we have a 38 inch strand of some pretty unique African trade beads. These are from the 1950s, they are square and rectangle shaped aluminum beads. The story behind these beats is that they melted down pots and pans to make them. I’m not quite sure how they got the aluminum but that’s the story I was told. I used to work at bead store in my hometown of Oberlin. I worked there for a decade running their website, they are now defunct. At least the brick and mortar store is. I believe that Ruth still has an online presence. Anyways, there is beads are supposed to be made of aluminum, although I don’t have any providence. Their average size is 7 mm x 4 mm give or take a fraction. I bought this strand from a Gambian trader and he said they came from Kenya. believe what you like, they are pretty cool beads and I’ve used them in numerous designs. But now I need some cash so i am liquidating my entire Bead collection.
