Location: Sun; Part Sun Hardiness Zones: 4-9 Germination Instructions: As with many perennials, these seeds benefit from a period of moist cold to help them grow. This is done by giving them a cold 'winter' period (artificial or natural), Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Plant 2-3 mm deep; keep the soil moist at all times and temp around 40F. This is easily done by placing your tray in the fridge; if you don't have a lot of room in your fridge for a tray full of seeds, place the seeds and slightly damp peat or seed starting mix in a ziplock baggie and leave in the fridge for 6-8 weeks. After cold treatment, sprinkle the media and seeds and all onto a tray or container and let them germinate; ideal temperatures after cold treatment are on the cooler side, about 65-70F (room temperature is just fine). Keep slightly moist and watch for germination within 4-6 weeks. Meadow Cranesbill seeds can either be sown directly outside or in trays of compost in the spring or autumn. Germination can be improved by lightly rubbing the seeds between 2 sheets of sandpaper. This is known as scarification and helps break down the tough outer shell of Meadow Cranesbill seeds. After this process is carried out, germination is normally fairly easy. The seedlings can then be pricked out and grown on, for planting out later in the year.
