The Olive Nerite Snail is a great choice for keeping uneaten food and algae in check, while at the same time it will not unexpectedly overpopulate your aquarium since the Olive Nerite Snail cannot breed in freshwater. Nerite Snails will not reproduce in fresh water. Because Nerites need brackish water to reproduce successfully, they will not take over a fresh water tank like many other snails do. This is one of the primary benefits of this snail. That said, Nerite Snail eggs will begin to appear on many hard surfaces of the tank. Nerite Snail eggs look like little white dots and are most noticeable on dark surfaces like overflow boxes or gravel. These are totally normal and a good sign that they are happy and healthy. The Olive Nerite Snail is an efficient scavenger that makes an ideal addition for freshwater community aquariums. Olive Nerite Snails are the wonder snail when it comes to algae eating. They eat green spot algae, green dust algae, fungus on wood, etc. They do not eat plants as you can see in my pictures. They will clean live and fake plants and all items in the tank. Olive Nerite Snails should not be kept with aggressive fish species that eat snails like some Cichlids or loaches that specifically eat them such as clown loaches as they could become a meal for them. Nerite Snails will not eat living plants or desirable mosses. If they eat all the algae in your tank their appetite can be easily satisfied with algae wafers, Spirulina discs or fresh vegetable pieces. You can feed them some fruits or veggies cleaned with only water. Example slices of Apples, Pears, Cucumbers, Carrots or some lettuce. Do not leave fresh fruits or veggies in the tank for over 10 hours. Remove any uneaten remains and make sure you are not throwing any snails away with it. How to acclimate Nerites into your tank. 1. Try to be home when they are delivered or request that they are picked up at the post office when ordering them and pick them up as early as possible on day of arrival. Do not allow them to sit in a hot or cold mailbox as they can be cooked or frozen and perish from this. 2. When you get receive the snails remove them from the shipping package and place them on a flat surface in your home to acclimate to your home temp. 15 to 20 min later remove them from the bag and the paper towel that they were shipped in. Place them into a bowl or cup with some of the water that they were shipped in. Then every 5 to 10 min add about a 8th of a cup of water from the tank that they are going to live in into this bowl or cup for about an hour. So about 5 or 10 times to get them used to their new home. 3. 10 to 15 minutes before adding the snails to the tank feed the fish so they are less likely to look at the snails as food. 4. When adding the snails to the tank place them ALL in on a solid surface. Even if it’s the bottom of the tank. Nerite Snails have A Hard Time Turning Over. Avoid dropping Nerite Snails into the water and letting them float to the bottom to land in various random positions. In most cases it’s almost impossible for them to right themselves. Nerites left upside down can die that way. Make sure Nerites are placed in the tank in the upright position so they get off to a good start. Nerites will have a much better start in your tank if you tank the few minutes to set them up with their feet down so they can walk off and do their job. 5.
