Below is information provided by the US Mint for each of the five American Women honored in 2023 with a quarter design:2023 American Women Quarters honoring Bessie Coleman Bessie Coleman was a pilot, advocate, and pioneer who flew to great heights as the first African American and first Native American woman pilot and first African American to earn an international pilot’s license. The reverse design depicts Bessie Coleman as she suits up in preparation for flight, her expression reflective of her determination to take to the skies, the only place she experienced a freedom she did not have on the ground. 2023 American Women Quarters honoring Eleanor Roosevelt Eleanor Roosevelt was one of our most active and influential first ladies. She was an author, reformer, civil liberties and human rights advocate, and the first American woman delegate to the United Nations. She was also a member of the first delegation to the UN. The reverse (tails) design depicts Eleanor Roosevelt and the scales of justice against a backdrop representing the globe, symbolic of her impactful work with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 2023 American Women Quarters honoring Edith Kanakaʻole Edith Kanakaʻole was an indigenous Hawaiian composer, chanter, kumu hula, and custodian of native culture, traditions, and the natural land. The reverse design depicts a portrait of Edith Kanakaʻole, with her hair and lei poʻo (head lei) morphing into the elements of a Hawaiian landscape, symbolizing her life’s work of preserving the natural land and traditional Hawaiian culture. The inscription “E hō mai ka ʻike” translates as “granting the wisdom,” a reference to the intertwined role hula and chants play in this preservation. 2023 American Women Quarters honoring Jovita Idar Mexican-American journalist, activist, teacher, community organizer, champion of bi-lingual education, and suffragist. Idar sought to empower Mexican-American women and provide quality children’s education. Jovita Idar wrote in-depth articles exposing the injustices and violence that affected women and Mexican-Americans. She founded multiple organizations to foster education and assistance for children, as well as empower women to learn, participate, and stand against the injustices. The reverse (tails) of the coin features a depiction of Jovita Idar with her hands clasped. Within her body are inscriptions representing some of her greatest accomplishments and the newspapers for which she wrote. 2023 American Women Quarters honoring Maria Tallchief America’s first major prima ballerina who broke barriers as a dancer and a Native American exhibiting strength and resilience both on and off the stage. Maria’s exceptional technique and energy as a ballerina transformed classical ballet, both in America and around the world. Maria Tallchief broke barriers as a dancer and a Native American exhibiting strength and resilience both on and off the stage. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a ballerina. Her role as the “Sugar Plum Fairy” in The Nutcracker was pivotal in the ballet’s success in America.
