Description: Fully titled, The Alternative : Most of What You Believe About Poverty is Wrong. Authored by Mauricio L. Miller, SELF-PUBLISHED, no publisher identified on title or copyright page, just the copyright by the author, so I'll assume he published it also. Overall in NEAR FINE CONDITION. Clean glossy dust jacket with a bit of creasing bottom of dust jacket on the spine. Pristine blue cloth boards with gilt spine titling, no interior marks in 214 clean and solidly bound pages except for SIGNATURE AND DATE (2019) ON TITLE PAGE. It is a scribbled autograph and it's not immediately obvious to be that of the author. However, an author signature with the date near the name of the author on the title page of the book is very likely to be that of the author. I also note that there are three letters are highlighted with long lines in this signature. The middle one looks like an "L", and the first and last are similar, don't exactly look like "M", but they are similar and I assume they are some version of M by the author. I can't find any other examples of this individual's signature or handwriting - you can be the judge. Here is an overview of this special individual and his book found online: "In The Alternative: Most of What You Believe About Poverty Is Wrong, author Mauricio Miller argues that the systems and programs in the United States that are intended to help people in poverty are based on flawed assumptions and attitudes. Miller, a social entrepreneur, poverty activist, and MacArthur genius grant recipient, proposes an alternative approach that focuses on the strengths and self-determination of individuals. He believes that we should invest in the poor and encourage them to use their skills and social networks to improve their lives. Miller emphasizes the importance of self-respect and self-determination as keys to helping the poor. He also argues that social programs should invest in the strengths of the poor and not be simply charities. Miller's book combines system thinking with personal experience to create a prescription that he believes can change the relationship between the poor and the rest of society, and put American families in the driver's seat of building their futures. Some say that the book is an important read for anyone working in social services or nonprofit organizations, and that it will complicate preconceived notions about poverty and anti-poverty programs."
