In 1838 the Cherokee Indians suffered the Trail of Tears. The Cherokee were forced from their native homeland in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee and made to travel to the new “Indian Territory,” in Oklahoma. The route was treacherous and a quarter to one-half of the Cherokee population perished during the removal, along the trail, and in the first year in Oklahoma. Those who remain are known as the Cherokee Nation. But more than 300 Cherokee hid in the mountains and escaped arrest. These are known as the Eastern band and were allowed to remain in Cherokee, N.C.
