It makes the swivel plate sturdier and it can hold way more weight, and it's less susceptible to uneven weight distribution. These quality plates come pre-greased to ease the "swivelness" and cut down on noise. It will also add to the life of the ball bearings. The plate is made from sheet-galvanized iron and cold-rolled to .8mm thick (entire plate is 9mm high), and the piece weighs about 1.5 lbs. Distance between holes on opposing sides: around 9.5" ... depending on which holes you use.
