In response, the company introduced the dramatically updated Silver Spirit (and long-wheelbase Silver Spur). Completely new styling, improved ride quality, and additional amenities were engineered on an updated version of the Shadow's general chassis. The new car was an instant hit, especially once it became available in North America for the 1981 model year. Much as with the company's other models, the Silver Spirit was continuously refined over its production. For 1990, it received sufficient changes to warrant a new name, Silver Spirit II. Nearly every element of the car was massaged to increase passenger comfort and drivability. Most notable of the many changes include increased power output, "Automatic Ride Control" adaptive dampers, a driver-side airbag, and additional HVAC vents. Silver Spirit II production ceased after only three years, whereupon it was itself replaced with the Silver Spirit III. Only 1,152 Spirit IIs were produced worldwide, making them somewhat more rare than their Silver Spur II counterparts (at 1,658 produced). Today, the Silver Spirit/Spur twins are well-regarded for their incredible build quality and exceptional material choices.
