Hatfield, 46, had just completed his 11th season as a head coach, serving five years at Air Force (1979-83) and six years at Arkansas (1984-89). He has an overall head coaching record of 82-48-2 (.629), including 55-17-1 at Arkansas, a 76 percent winning percentage. Overall he has taken teams to eight bowl games and has had five Associated Press Top 20 seasons.
