With the three volumes still in their original plastic wrap. Folding Maps to to introduction and translation, is inserted under original plastic wrap to volumes. 'England at the Time of Domesday' map is inserted in the pocket to the facsimile volume, and is held there by the original plastic wrap. A third map, of the 'County of Surrey according to the Domesday Book' is loosely inserted in the box. Extra panel for the box, being a dedication to the Queen is present. As is the red strip, which can change the slipcase into a display lecturn, and the instructions on doing so. Very scarce to have this work in such a pristine condition, especially with the original plastic wraps to the books. Comprising of the Domesday Book Studies, which is a detailed explanation of the Domesday Book and therefore a companion to the other two volumes. The work explains the making of the Domesday Book, its contents, the purpose of it and the value of it. The other two volumes to this set are specifically on the Surrey portion of the Domesday Book. One volume is an introduction and translation and the contains facsimiles of the actual Domesday Book portion on Surrey. By Dr Ann Williams, editor in chief and R W H Erskine general editor. The Domesday Book was a manuscript of the 'Great Survey' of much of England and Wales completed in 1086 by order of King William the Conqueror. It was written in Medieval Latin and included some vernacular native terms without Latin equivalents. This particular collection is The Surrey circuit of the Domesday. A lovely example of the Alecto Historical Edition's revival of the Domesday book. CONDITION In the original quarter cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Held in the original plastic protective covers and housed in the original clamshell box, which is quarter morocco. Externally, the books are in an excellent condition with very little shelfwear. Plastic wraps are also in a pristine condition. Clamshell box is rubbed to the joints with loss to the leather from the maneuvering of the mechanism. Small loss to the spine due to rubbing. The maps are in excellent condition. Internally, all three volumes are firmly bound with the pages bright and clean. The clamshell box is in a VERY GOOD INDEED condition.
