During its development and testing, it went on to prove itself off-road in rally racing before it became the most technologically advanced road car built during the 1980s. Between the 'Gruppe B' prototype's debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1983 and the official release of the road car to the public in 1987, the 959 competed in the grueling Paris to Dakar Rally. The three-car effort in 1985 failed, with two 959s involved in accidents and the third suffering a fatal oil leak. Porsche returned in 1986 with another three-car effort and erased the previous year's misfortune, finishing first, second and sixth in the car class. The blue and white #186 Rothmans Porsche 959 was powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.85-liter flat-six engine that produced 400 horsepower and featured air-cooled cylinders and water-cooled cylinder heads. Piloted and co-piloted to victory by Frenchmen René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne over a three-week period, the winning #186 959 completed 18 stages and covered more than 9000 miles across France, Algeria, Niger, Mali, Guinea, Mauritania, and Senegal.
