Additional Information He was taken in 1976 by notorious cartel leader Pablo Escobar by the regional Colombian control agency after Escobar's arrest in the same year that he founded the Medellin Cartel, which he would remain the sole leader of for decades, becoming one of the most successful drug traffickers in history and amassing considerable wealth by establishing trade routes through South and Central America, which would ultimately supply markets in the United States and beyond. Escobar gained popularity with the people of Colombia by self-funding numerous civic improvements, including housing for low-income people, soccer pitches, and other projects that enriched communities that had been left behind by corrupt politicians for decades. He gained a form of Robin Hood lore that allowed him to evade arrest for decades before he ultimately surrendered himself to authorities in 1991. Following his surrender, Escobar brokered a deal that offered no extradition with Colombian President Cesar Gaviria, which included the stipulation that Escobar would be housed in a private prison that he constructed himself and called La Catedral. Escobar would escape this facility the following year while being transferred to a more standard institution. Escobar would evade authorities until 1993 when he was killed by police the day after his forty-fourth birthday in his hometown. More than 25,000 Colombians attended Escobar's funeral, paying tribute to his legacy as a champion of the poor and advocate for the working class, who considered themselves victims of corruption by politicians at the highest level.
