Whenhe told his wife that he was goingto build up another bike, she toldhim to do it right in the living room.“Why not be comfortable, andnear- everything you need?” So hejust took out a full-wall picturewindow and rolled the bike right in,next to the bar, stereo, workroomand kitchen. What was rolled in was a stock1954 meter maid model 45 trike, ready for a complete tranformation. To begin with, the bike wasstripped down to the bare frame.Engine and transmission were com-pletely overhauled, and left stockexcept for a little more chrome thanMilwaukee supplied, and a set ofshorty pipes with 16-in. silencers.Mel took the frame to his broth-er Gene’s place. Brother Gene is awelder, and he raked the frame bycutting an inch out of the top tube. The tube was sleeved before reweld-ing, for strength and safety. The weld was ground downsmooth, and a week of sanding anda week of priming resulted in a sur-face ready for painting. The frame was left unmolded, sothat less time would be spent in con-struction, and the bike could be rid-den some time within the foreseeablefuture. Ten coats of candy apple redlacquer completed the work on theframe.A quick trip to Gary Bang’s cus-tom cycle shop in Canoga Park pro-duced a lot of the goodies needed forthe next stages. The first item wasa 24-in. over stock custom springer. At the bottom, it carries a 3.00 x21 Avon Speedmaster, running on astainless steel rim laced to a specialhub, mounted on a turned downSportster axle.At the top, 6-in. Z-bars ride on topof a set of 5-in. risers, and a 5-in.Bates sealed beam to light the wayat night. An old banana tank that was lyingaround the house from some previousconstruction was modified for thetrike. Ajax Welding in Van Nuysremounted the fill hole at the top, to... And much more! 12336
