The antebellum plantation doctor at Rosedown looked out of his office on the breathtaking beauty of formal gardens, but he had little time to enjoy them. With limited medical knowledge and tools, he worked to cure such killer diseases as yellow fever, cholera and a host of other maladies. In the mid-1800s, Dr. John King, brother-in-law of Martha and Daniel Turnbull, the original builders of Rosedown Plantation, presided over the ills of some five hundred human beings from this little office between the gardens and the plantation house. Rosedown was restored to its former grandeur in 1956 by the late Catherine Fondren Underwood and Mr. Milton Underwood of Houston, Texas.
