Formed in 1833, it operated independently until 1976 when it, with other financially-troubled carriers, were merged into the government-owned Conrail system. The Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ), operated in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania from 1839-1976, when it was also absorbed into Conrail with other eastern railroads. While the CNJ carried both freight and passengers, it was best known for its commuter passenger services into Philadelphia and New York City. Surviving lines of the Reading and CNJ are now operated primarily by Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation. For auction is a dining car order form. This was used by passengers/waiters to enter the menu selections for food items; the waiters would then enter the prices and total amount due. The form measures appx 8 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches and is printed on light-weight paperstock. It is in excellent condition and appears to have had no use.
