1964 American Silver Proof Set.

Description: 1964 Silver Proof Set. Unopened Envelope. This proof set was the end and the beginning of the Proof Era. End because it was the last of the Proofs for three years, and the last of the plain proofs in plain packaging. The Mint got the idea--gradually over the next many years, that Proof Sets were good merchandise, and the packaging got more and more elaborate until the current era, with multiple lenses displaying multiple series, in fancy boxes. But in 1964 it was plain plastic with all of five circulating coins, three of which were silver. The CoA (included) is all about how you should not send the set back for defects, because they are probably creases in the packaging! 1964 was the last of the silver coins minted for circulation of course. The catalog price of Proof Sets took a big dive after 1964, and was many years away from resuming the high value of the early sets. Mintage on the 1964 issue was 3,950,762. After the i964 issue, The Mint put out three years of SMS coins (Special Mint Sets) which were shiny and carefully struck but not quite Proof quality, and then in 1968 resumed true Proof strikes, until the very high art of present-day proofs. This offering has never been opened. Everything is Mint fresh for you. The photo is from an opened envelope, and is not the specimen that you will receive.
