About the Book:Our farm problem has been with us so long that there is a tendency to assume that it must be lived with eternally, This is a fallacy. Something can be done about it that will benefit producers and consumers alike, Against a background of a lifetime of farming, Ezra Taft Benson addresses himself to both city-dweller and farmer. In FREEDOM TO FARM, Ezra Taft Benson, long-time leader in the field of agriculture, tells, in clear, descriptive terms, what he believes are steps to the solution of the farm problem. Here is a complete, intelligent history of the “farm question” since the early 1900s—a modern-day debacle that has the magnitude and implications of the Industrial Revolution. Benson’s thesis is that the government should get out of agriculture, and here he tells us why—why farm supports have “caused the farm problem to outgrow the farm and to become a great national problem,” why the underprivileged farmer benefits least by high subsidies, why the big operatur reaps the biggest benefits. FREEDOM TO FARM is a highly informative, readable source book for every person interested in the farm question a controversial and important statement by a leading figure of his times. About author, Ezra Taft Benson:Ezra Taft Benson, one of seven children, was born sixty years ago on a forty-acre farm in Idaho. Since then Benson has been many things—a student and scholar of considerable distinction, a high-ranking figure in the Mormon Church, a major relief worker in Europe. His career began in 1921 when he served in the British Isles as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On his return home, Mr. Benson continued his education, eventually to be elected to Gamma Sigma Delta, honor society of agriculture. He was among those who helped organize the Idaho Cooperative Council and in the spring of 1939 was appointed executive secretary of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives and has since then served on several advisory committees and national boards in the field of agriculture. Secretary Benson served as president of the European Mission of the church with headquarters in London, England, and as administrator for the reorganization of the work of the church in 14 European countries, South Africa, and the Near East. Over a period of 10 months, he traveled more than 60,000 miles through these war-torn countries. Mrs. Benson and their two sons, in their family of six children, have also served as missionaries for the church. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc. The photos and text in this listing are copyrighted.
