News item reads:MIKOYAN'S RECEPTION COMMITTEENEW YORK: Displaying anti-Soviet placards, a group of Iron Curtain refugees await the arrival of Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan at Idlewild Airport here Jan. 18th. Two hundred policemen were on hand to cope with any demonstrations as Mikoyan arrived from Los Angeles. Only 20 or 30 pickets showed up, however, and police kept them confined to a parking lot area several blocks from where Mikoyan's plane landed. The sign-carrying demonstrators were unable to get a glimpse of the Red leader, who was whisked to a waiting limousine. 1/13/59 Anastas Ivanovich Mikoyan 25 November 1895 – 21 October 1978 was a Soviet politician and Bolshevik revolutionary who served as the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, the head of state of the Soviet Union. A member of the Communist Party's Central Committee from 1923 to 1976, he was the only Soviet figure who managed to remain at the highest levels of power from the days of Lenin, through the eras of Stalin and Khrushchev, to his retirement under Brezhnev.
