The Pennsylvania Railroad (reporting mark PRR, legal name The Pennsylvania Railroad Company, also known as the "Pennsy") was an American Class I railroad that was established in 1846 and was headquartered in Philadelphia. Named for the commonwealth it was established in, by 1882, the Pennsylvania Railroad had become the largest railroad (by traffic and revenue), the largest transportation enterprise, and the largest corporation in the world. Its budget was second only to the U.S. government. Over the years, it acquired, merged with or owned part of at least 800 other rail lines and companies. In 1968, the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with its rival New York Central Railroad and the railroad eventually went by the name of Penn Central Transportation Company, or "Penn Central" for short. The former competitors’ networks integrated poorly with each other, and the railroad filed for bankruptcy within two years. Bankruptcy continued and on April 1, 1976, the railroad gave up its railroad assets, along with the assets of several other failing northeastern railroads, to a new railroad named Consolidated Rail Corporation, or Conrail for short. From its very beginning, the Pennsylvania Railroad employed both, custom built steam engines and acquired units from railroads that the PRR either acquired or merged with. The Pennsylvania Railroad was slow to dieselize. By the end of WW2 they only had 18 units. The PRR decided in 1948 to place diesel locomotives on all express passenger trains. The end of the steam era on the PRR was around 1964 - 1965. THE "BROADWAY LIMITED" This auction is for a vintage Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train schedule from 1959. That makes it about 60+ years old. The booklet is a soft cover 8"x9" book of 47 pages, folded in half for pocket convenience. While this book lists all the relative trains, routes, times and fees, there is much more provided by this advertising brochure. To begin with, it contains a full two page map of the Pennsylvania Railroad system. There are numerous ads for the accommodations available on the trains. Featured are some of the Pennsylvania Railroad's most famous named trains of the day like the flagship passenger train Broadway Limited, from New York City to Chicago in the amazing time of 16 hours. The train departed New York at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time and arrived at Chicago the following morning at 9:00 a.m. Central Time, 907.7 miles.
