Gunter's mind was always far ahead of his hands, and he could fixate on a project hard enough to miss races. He was the U.S.'s answer to Ireland's Rex McCandless, designer of the Norton "Featherbed" chassis-a prolific creator of technologies who quit school early and educated himself for the rest of his life.
