Description: MODEST MUSSORGSKY His Life and Works Written by M. D. (Michel-Dimitri) Calvocoressi. Published by Rockliff, London. Copyright 1956; as there are no statements of printing—that is, no mention of further printings, I believe this to be the first (probably only) printing of the book. There are some black and white illustration plates as well as musical scores in the book. From Wikipedia: Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (21 March [O.S. 9 March] 1839 – 28 March [O.S. 16 March] 1881) was a Russian composer, one of the group known as "The Five". He was an innovator of Russian music in the romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music. Many of his works were inspired by Russian history, Russian folklore, and other nationalist themes. Such works include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. For many years Mussorgsky's works were mainly known in versions revised or completed by other composers. Many of his most important compositions have posthumously come into their own in their original forms, and some of the original scores are now also available. Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi (2 October 1877 – 1 February 1944) was a multilingual music writer and critic who promoted musicians such as Franz Liszt and Modest Mussorgsky. Calvocoressi's legacy as a music critic and translator was his advocacy of Russian music. He wrote three books on Modest Mussorgsky. He was the French advisor for Sergei Diaghilev as Diaghilev was introducing Russian arts to the French. From the Foreword by Ethel Calvocoressi: The tale of what happened to the manuscript of this book should I think, be told. It had been commissioned by Kussevitsky for 1924, but in 1925 my husband learned that Professor Lamm was preparing to publish the full genuine text of ‘Boris Godunof’ and subsequently of all Mossorgsky’s other works, and this entailed much writing and rewriting of the book over many years. It was finished in 1938, while people were bing hastily fitted with gas-masks and shelters were being built. The maunuscript was sent to Paris, where Kussevitsky had his publishing firm, and there it stayed all during the war without our knowing if it was safe. My husband died on February 1st, 1944. Kussevitsky died later and then followed the collapse of this firm after the war. Meanwhile Francis Poulene, when visiting London, kindly promised to find out about the fate of the manuscript, which he most happily did. After the war came paper-rationing and other difficulties; that chapter is ended… DESCRIPTION: 321 pages 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 inches First printing, hardcover—no dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition—there is no dustjacket.
